Effective Delegation often holds the key to managerial success and time management. What should you consider before delegating? Here are some tips to make sure delegation goes the best it can:
1. Be clear on the tasks you want to, and can, delegate. Not eveything can be delegated as a manager. What are some of the concrete activities/tasks you can pass on.
2. Consider who might benefit from the opportunity to take on the task. Do they have the skills (or stretch ability) to get it done?
3. Be clear on what the end result is expected to look like. Make sure that there is a common picture held by both of you.
4. Ensure that the person you are delegating to has the necessary resources, and authority, to complete the task.
5. Create a common understanding about time frames, success factors, and what the final product will look like.
6. Set up regular touchpoints/meetings to check in on progress and identify any roadblocks that are emerging.
7. Once the task is completed, review/identify any lessons learned.
8. Recognize and celebrate the achievement in a way that is meaningful and relevant.
Have a great week,
Jennifer

Six Tips for Back to Work Success
For many of us it’s back to work today, just as kids are back to school. I hope that you had a great summer, and are gearing up for the fall. After spending an almost hedonistic 6 weeks based primarily out of my office in Muskoka, it’s back to work for me here in the city.
I thought that I’d share some back to work tips to get you going for this fall:
1. Keep organized: Chances are that you spent some time over the summer months getting your office back into shape (or maybe your desk is still buried under a mountain of paper). To keep it in the same shape you’ve got it in right now, spend some time keeping it in order every week. A little effort every day, or every week will keep it under control.
2.Take time to plan: Many of you have read my writing on this topic before. I am a strong supporter of daily planning for the day ahead (whether it happens the night before or first thing in the morning). Research shows that 15-20 minutes of planning time daily can save up to 2 hours of unfocused effort. What’s your game plan this week?
3.Set some goals or refresh your acquaintance with your goals: What are the major goals you want to accomplish by the end of the year? What needs to happen to get these accomplished? Spend some time this week pulling out your annual or quarterly goal lists, review them and make modifications as necessary. Are your daily activities moving you closer to your goals? If not, what changes do you need to make? What needs to come more into focus?
4. Bring that summer time feel into work more often: Do you ever notice that the pace of work is really different in the summer? What makes summer special for you? What makes you more productive or effective during the summer? How can you bring more of that “summertime pace” into the fall work days?
5.Unwire, just a bit: Many of you may have experienced the joy of unwiring over the summer from your Blackberry, your email and your voice mail for a short while. I’m not advocating unwiring totally during the work day, but ease back into it gradually. Recent research out of Britain has shown that email management is the number one stressor for workers today. What systems can you put into place to get your email and voice mail under control? How much time do you spend checking email? Could you reduce this and chunk it so that your time between email management becomes more productive?
6. Keep enjoying the things that you did during the summer: The summer pace often allows us to indulge in those things that really matter to us – spending time with friends, family, in nature or at the gym. Just because it’s back to work, do you need to drop all those things at once? What can you do to keep some of these activities you enjoyalive during the fall and winter?
I’d be interested in hearing which of these 6 Tips resonate with you, or what advice you have for Back to Work Success. Please feel free to comment below.
Have a great workweek,

Curious about Coaching? View CBS Sunday Morning Report
Curious about coaching? CBS Sunday Morning ran an interesting story on coaching yesterday. You can view it here.
It provides a good overview of what coaching is, and how can support clients in business, life and the home. There's a great eight and a half minute video clip that you can view on the right hand side. I hope that you will check it out if you are curious about what coaching is all about.
As a Certified, Credentialized coach with the International Coach Federation myself, it was wonderful to see how they provided an overview of some of the diverse areas of the coaching profession, including leadership and executive coaching which I provide. They did not provide too much coverage of some of the other areas that I provide coaching in - career coaching, team coaching and group coaching. If you are interested in learning more about how coaching in these areas can support you, I hope that you will visit my website for more information.
I also offer a complimentary coaching session by phone (40 min) to interested individuals to see if I might be a good fit in supporting you to achieve your goals. To schedule a sample coaching session, please email me at jennifer{at}potentialsrealized{dot}com.
I look forward to hearing from you and would welcome your comments on the CBS spotlight after you have seen it -- please feel free to comment below.
With best wishes,

Recharging Your Batteries

Recharging Your Batteries
Many of us are starting to wind down for the Easter long weekend -- where most offices will be closed for the next three or four days. Are you going to take advantage of this time to recharge your batteries? Ask yourself, where is your energy level right now?
In speaking with a number of associates and clients over the last few days, I realize that many of us, myself included, have been running on full-tilt since the start of the new year. Energy stocks are lower than usual. What will you be doing this weekend to recharge?
Long weekends are a wonderful time to reconnect with family and those things most important to us. It's also a great time to get things done around the house -- things that may have been hanging over our head, sapping our energy. It's also a great time to reflect back on your accomplishments, and spend time setting out some goals for the next few months. What do you want to have accomplished by summer?
If you aren't going to be recharging this weekend, I hope that you will consider joining me on Saturday May 5th for the Your Balanced Life! Virtual Retreat. From 10 - 4 pm (EST) that day, we will be spending the day retreating virtually from our own homes, reconnecting with those things most important in our lives. We "meet" hourly by phone, connecting for about 20 minutes to undertake a group exercise, and then spend the remaining part of the hour retreating individually at our own locations offline, doing some individual inner work.
I hold these virtual retreats every quarter and participants have joined me from around the world. I'd love to have you join me on May 5th, whether you are recharging this weekend or not. Early bird special pricing is in effect for a few more weeks.
Have a wonderful, restful long weekend!

The Power of Focus
FOCUSPhoto compliments of Imagebase
Happy New Year to all readers! I hope that 2007 has started off on an upwards tangent. Today's blog post is about focus, and how important this is for business success. What are your major business goals for this year? Your personal goals for this year?
If you haven't read it yet, I'd invite you to visit my last post on Creating a Vision for 2007. In the exercise included, I asked readers to set out three major goals for 2007.
What are your major goals for this year? Are these front in centre in your mind or did you need to look them up? How will you maintain focus on these throughout the year?
Much of the work I do with coaching clients at the end of the year, and the start of a new one, is to reflect on the last year, and visioning for the upcoming one. I sometimes have clients mention how they were detracted from the major goals they had set out for themselves at the start of the year. Sometimes their initial goals were replaced by even bigger and more breathtaking goals - a fantastic situation! Once in a while the important goals have been pushed aside by other priorities -- and I usually ask, "What's been the cost of this?". What would be the cost of you not accomplishing your most important goals this year?
What will it take for you to maintain lazer like focus on the most important goals you have set yourself for this year?
What would accomplishing these goals look like? How would it transform your life and work?
What would the accomplishment of these goals mean for you? Your business? Your family?
I'd love to hear from you as to what focus means for you in 2007 -- please feel free to comment below.

Are your goals sitting in the drawer?
I came across a great blog and resource regarding goals last week -- Jill Koening's Goal Blog (www.goalblog.com). Jill was featured over the weekend on Fox News Saturday.
Goal setting, along with time management, continue to be some of the most prevalent issues facing organizational teams and businesses today. When was the last time you revisited your business goals? Your team/department goals? Your own personal goals?
As we move into fall, and soon into the last quarter of the year, consider your goals for 2006. Have you looked at them lately, or are they collecting dust in your drawer after being written down earlier this year? What goals have you accomplished this year? Have you taken the time to celebrate them? What goals are still left? What can you do to ensure you meet them?
The next 90 Days Business Success Group Coaching program will be starting on October 9th on Mondays from 7 - 8 am (EST). We will be meeting twice a month as a group by phone, and once a month I will be doing a 30 minute individual coaching session with each participant.
The Business Success Group Coaching program is for business owners who are looking to create extraordinary results for their business. We will be covering a range of topics including business visionning, marketing, goal setting, and values. One of the most valuable components of the program is the momentum created and dedicated focus on your business for the 90 Day period. I will be writing more about the program on this blog in the coming weeks, as the next program starts very soon. Space is limited to 8 business owners. Registration forms are available here.
If you answered - my goals are still sitting in the drawer - and your vision for what lies ahead is BIG, I hope that you will join me in moving your business forward starting on October 9th.
To reserve your spot, please email me at jennifer@potentialsrealized.com or call toll free 1-866-217-1960.
